| PETCO has published Design For Recycling Guidelines so that plastics packaging designers have a better understanding of the environmental implications of design decisions thus promoting good environmental practices. This also ensures that packaging is compliant (Waste Act 2009) and demonstrates 'due diligence'.
Existing plastics packaging, companies are asked to review their current packaging portfolio against these recycling guidelines, highlight any aspects where the design could be improved and then implement changes as soon as possible, as the opportunity arises. For new packaging, companies are asked to integrate these guidelines into the design process at the start, to minimise cost and maximise the opportunity for compliance.
The Guidelines cover 5 specific aspects of design for recycling, namely material selection; material identification; composite materials and residues; colour, closures, liners, caps, seals; labels, adhesives and inks.
